What is it?
Understanding Coronary Heart Disease is the first part to effective treatment and prevention.
- Very common in Males ages 50 and older
- Should be examined by a doctor
- Treatable by a medical professional

Coronary artery disease is a condition where the major blood vessels supplying the heart are narrowed. The reduced blood flow can cause chest pain and shortness of breath. Coronary artery disease describes the state of arteries when they become too narrow to supply blood and oxygen to the heart. CAD often develops due to a build-up of cholesterol (and other waste) on the artery walls, creating plaque. This plaque can obstruct blood flow and cause debilitating health problems. If plaque breaks off or rupture, platelets will start to cluster around the area to repair the blood vessel. This can easily block the artery and block the flow of blood, which can lead to a heart attack. The symptoms that develop for CAD are not noted until the artery is significantly damaged. Severe artery damage decreases blood flow to the heart, which presents as the cause to the symptoms. Treatment for coronary artery disease usually involves lifestyle changes and, if necessary, drugs and certain medical procedures.
